Welcome to Carol Felsenthal's Official Web Site.

Carol Felsenthal is the author of several biographies, including Citizen Newhouse: Portrait of a Media Merchant, Power, Privilege, and the Post: The Katharine Graham Story, and Princess Alice: The Life and Times of Alice Roosevelt Longworth.

Her latest book is Clinton in Exile: A President Out of the White House, a look at Bill Clinton’s post presidency. The paperback edition, with updated material, was published by HarperCollins in June 2009.

HBO will soon start production of a television adaptation of her biography of Katharine Graham, Power, Privilege and the Post: The Katharine Graham Story. Joan Didion has written the revised screenplay.

In 2005 and 2006 she taught “Writing Profiles” at the University of Chicago—a course that drew on her experience writing magazine profiles of people ranging from Ann Landers to Don Rumsfeld to Michelle Obama. She has also given speeches around the country and abroad and appeared on scores of television and radio shows to talk about her experiences writing unauthorized biographies of some of the country's most powerful people.

On September 4, 2008 Carol appeared on a NBC Today Show panel, with co-hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. Fellow panelists included Jodi Kantor of the New York Times and Janice Min, editor in chief of US Weekly. The subject was Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, John McCain’s just-selected vice presidential nominee.

Chicago magazine contributing editor Carol Felsenthal's 1993 biography of the late Washington Post Publisher Katharine Graham is about to be made into a movie by HBO Films.

Writer Joan Didion has adapted Power, Privilege and the Post: the Katharine Graham Story into a screenplay. No word yet on who'll play the legendary media mogul in the film to be directed by Tom Hooper.

Meanwhile, Felsenthal is busy working on a new biography of former President Bill Clinton, to be published by William Morrow.


Journalism Award


Carol's most recent Journalism award, for in-depth reporting, was awarded to her in April 2005, as follows:


SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISTS HONORS BEST JOURNALISM IN 2004 PETER LISAGOR AWARDS

”The awards are named for Peter Lisagor, late Washington bureau chief of the Chicago Daily News. Reporters and editors from SPJ chapters in five cities reviewed nearly 900 entries published or broadcast in 2004. Plaques were presented for 61 reports, chosen for such attributes as enterprise, accuracy, scope, style and impact.”
